What to do During an Earthquake

One of the most important things you can do during an earthquake is stay put! Make sure you avoid areas near windows, doors, and anything that could fall and become a hazard to you.  If you are caught outside during an earthquake, you should move into an area that is away from trees and buildings so you can duck and cover your head.

When driving, do not pull over near objects that could fall.  Move to the clearest spot that you can find while being cautious of damage that has already occurred to the roadways.

Additionally, there are steps that you can take to prepare your home for an earthquake in the future.
  • Secure bookcases and other cabinets to the nearest wall
  • Anchor computers and general appliances to desks, counters, and tables.
  • Secure fixtures hanging from the ceiling to more permanent parts of your home.
  • Place heavier items on lower shelves and tables and lighter objects on top in case they were to fall during an earthquake.
Remember to stay safe with these tips!
