Unfortunately, tornadoes can happen anywhere in the United States. One of the most important things you can do in order to ensure your safety during a tornado is to make sure that you have a proper structure to take cover in. Make sure everyone knows where this structure is and when to meet at it in case of an emergency.
If you are at your home when a tornado hits, go to the center point of the structure. This is a great place to seek shelter because there are no windows nearby. You should also stay away from larger structures such as stairs and underneath heavy tables in case they collapse.
Weather is a force of its own and we can never know how long a storm might last. So, you should also assemble an emergency kit to store things such as a flashlight, batteries, non-perishable food and water, medical supplies and a radio.
If severe weather destroys any personal property, a claim adjuster may want to inspect the area for any damage that you report. A good way to prepare for this is to keep records and pictures of your belongings before a disaster strikes.
An insurance company may issue an immediate advance, if you cannot live in your home after a severe weather event, so you can buy clothing and other necessities. Keep records of all of the money that you spend while dealing with relocation or temporary expenses during repairs.
After extreme weather, practice caution when entering any damaged areas. Beware of flooding, weak structures, downed power lines and gas leaks.
For your insurance company, do some emergency repairs and board up broken windows, put a tarp on the roof to avoid further leakage and recover belongings that are not damaged before they come to inspect the area.
