Tips on Beating the Cold This Winter

Whether you're inside or out, it can be difficult to keep warm during the winter months. Here are some tips for staying warm.
While outside...
  • Bundle up
    • Wear several layers of clothing, including a waterproof or windproof layer.
  • Protect your appendages
    •  Wear hats, gloves, ear muffs, extra socks and boots, if needed.
  • Stay active!
    • On of the best ways to stay warm is to keep moving.
    • Moving around causes your body to burn energy which creates heat.
    • If you are staying in a specific location, try walking in place or doing jumping jacks to keep you body moving.
  • Carry something warm with you
    • Try using reusable hand warmers.
    • A warm cup of coffee or soup in travel mugs can keep you warm, inside and out!
  • Stay dry
  • Limit the amount of exposed skin
    • Heat escapes from exposed skin fastest, so cover up as much skin as possible.

In your car...
  • Carry extra bottles of water in your car
  • Extra blankets, coats, or hats
    • If your car breaks down, you run out of gas, or become stranded somewhere, staying warm is so important.
  • Carry a shovel and extra bag of salt, sand, or cat litter in your trunk
    • If you are stuck in a ditch or on ice, salt, sand and cat little can be used to create traction under tires.
  • Jumper cables
  • Ice scraper
  • Extra batteries for your phone and flashlight
    • You can use your cell phone to call emergency services and give them your exact location.
  • A first aid kit and flares

While inside...
  • Drink plenty of water
    • Water helps your body retain by heat.
  • Layer your clothing
    • This is one of the simplest(and most cost efficient) ways to stay warm indoors.
  • Insulate your home
    • Seal any open spaces near doors or windows.
  • Take a warm bath
  • Make your bed! And not just because it looks nice!
    • A made bed will keep your sheets warmer.
    • Invest in an electric blanket.
    • If you don't have an electric blanket, put a warm, sealed water bottle under the sheets 30 minutes before you head to bed.
Make sure you have car and renter's insurance to protect you, in case of any accidents!
