Tips for Buying and Selling

There is always a possibility of fraud in the world, particularly with used vehicles. Follow these tips to protect yourself from becoming a fraud victim!

  • Do not sell a vehicle on a Friday night. Banks are not open on the weekends and you will have to wait until Monday to try and verify the transaction.  If the transaction is fake, the thief would have had adequate time to get away by then.
  • Always be sure to check two forms of identification. Having a certified check does not ensure that the payment of a check is valid. A way to verify this is to call the issuing bank.
  • Keep their contact information on file. Things such as home, cell phone and work phone numbers are good to get.  You should also obtain the the address of the person you are selling to BEFORE you give them the rights to the vehicle. Express caution if they say that they only have a cell phone number.
  • Don't be fooled by great prices. Be sure to search for the history of a used vehicle that you are looking to buy. A good price does not always mean good quality!
  • Be careful with transactions that are out-of-state. Do not leave without the title to the item that you have purchased. When completing the transaction, complete it at a Secretary of State location to help reduce the risk of fraud. The Secretary of State can quickly and correctly verify that the license and title information is legitimate.
